Most private citizens are unaware that current CAFE standards exist, let alone what they mean and how they impact our society. That doesn’t mean that the average person remains unaffected by them, though.
Before we get to specifics, however, let’s consider what CAFE standards actually are and what they’re intended to accomplish.
In short, CAFE standards are put in place to promote fuel efficiency. Although first enacted decades ago, they’ve been updated over the years to allow for innovations in technology. One of those innovations, of course, is hydroforming, which allows for lighter and stronger alternatives to certain automotive parts.
That means auto manufacturers are the group directly impacted by CAFE standards. Because failing to meet these standards results in a monetary fine, automakers carefully assess their production techniques in order to streamline vehicle weight.
Because auto manufacturers rely on hydroforming companies to provide them with necessary parts, our industry has also felt the impact of the new CAFE standards. We’re happy to provide this service to the industry, knowing that when any one market grows, that growth stimulates the overall economy.
The group who has enjoyed indirect impact, however, has been the consumers themselves. Although many are unaware of how CAFE standards have influenced their daily lives, they experience many benefits. Among other things, it’s been proven that increasing fuel economy “will create domestic jobs, save consumers money at the pump, cut global warming pollution, and put us on a path to cut projected U.S. oil consumption in half over the next 20 years” (UCSUSA).
Here at American Hydroformers, we’re proud of the role we play in keeping America’s vehicles lean, green, and fuel-efficient. If you would like to hear more about our services, or if you have questions about anything else, please feel free to contact us. We look forward to working with you.
