Here on the blog, we enjoy bringing you regular posts about the benefits of hydroforming. Today we’d like to take a step back and present a lesson on hydroforming for beginners: what the process entails and why it matters.
What Hydroforming Is
The process is easily understood by breaking the word itself into its separate parts. As the prefix hydro implies, the high-pressure hydraulic fluid is used to mold metal by forcing against the surface of a die. Once the pressure is applied, the metal (whether sheet or tube) is formed into the desired shape.
Why Hydroforming Matters
The development and perfection of the process has had implications in many major industries. Cars are lighter, racing bikes more sleek, and a wide array of electronics more durable and efficient. Of course, since the lightening of car and truck frames has implications for shipping expenses, the process has had a far-reaching impact on costs as well.
A great example of the process in practical action would be the Samsung CL80 and the Samsung TL240 cameras, the first two hydroformed cameras on the market.
The back of each camera is slightly tilted, as are the shutter buttons. Samsung says that these slight angles serve a dual purpose: for comfort, and to assist with high-angle self-portraits and group shots. (Tech Hive).
Although it’s doubtful that these camera owners are aware of the process in action, those of us in the know are aware that we have the good men and women of the hydroforming industry to thank for these exciting possibilities.
