New Discovery, Implications for High-Temperature Metal Gas Forming

Metal

From time to time, new discoveries change the way we approach various aspects of industry and technology. Recently, the discovery of a new metal has us doing exactly that.

The Discovery of New Metal

Japanese scientists recently identified a metal that can withstand temperatures in the nearly unbelievable ranges of 1400C-1600C. Called MoSiBTiC, it’s actually a titanium carbide (TiC)-reinforced, molybdenum-silicon-boron (Mo-Si-B)-based alloy.

“Our experiments show that the MoSiBTiC alloy is extremely strong compared with cutting-edge Nickel-based single crystal superalloys, which are commonly used in hot sections of heat engines such as jet engines of aircrafts and gas turbines for electric power generation,” said lead author Professor Kyosuke Yoshimi of Tohoku University’s Graduate School of Engineering. Though this is still a somewhat fresh discovery, some implications are already apparent.

Why It Matters

Since MoSiBTiC is able to withstand extremely high temperatures without deforming, it creates new thresholds for what’s possible in the hottest parts of everything from jet engines to gas turbines. Since heat engine performance has implications for the future of America’s energy conservation, the discovery of this new metal could have a far-reaching effect as it impacts performance development.

What It Means

Among other things, this means MoSiBTiC may not be the best candidate for high-temperature metal gas forming. Since it can withstand extreme heat beyond the standard level of high-temperature metal gas forming, we don’t expect to be working with it here at American Hydroformers any time soon. Although you never know. As we’ve already pointed out, new developments are unfolding all the time.

Since each new development leads to further developments, it could just be a matter of time.

Meanwhile, we’re ready and available for any jobs not involving MoSiBTiC.
