Hydroforming is a unique process used to form metal. As a unique process, it also solves unique problems. Hydroforming makes a number of products possible that wouldn’t be possible through mainstream methods. Although it is not the most common method of forming metal, it is very useful, and a necessity to our society today. Let’s talk a little about how hydroforming works and what it does.
Actually, hydroforming isn’t really that complicated. Often, although there are exceptions, the piece starts as a sheet of metal. If it needs to be bent into a general shape, such as a curve or an angle, to better fit into the mold, this happens first, and then it goes into the hydroform mold. Really, it sits on top of the mold, but the machine surrounds both the mold and the piece, with some extra space on top. Hydraulic fluid is then pushed into the chamber, forcing the metal piece down into the mold. Once the piece takes the shape of the mold, it is removed from the chamber and washed. It is then taken to be finished with a laser or other similar tool.
There are variations of this basic method, such as tube hydroforming. Any of these methods are used to create everyday items and products that we use in our lives without even realizing it, such as car parts and musical instruments.
